Australia’s General Skilled Migration (GSM) program is designed to attract highly skilled individuals to address labor shortages and contribute to the nation’s economy. This points-based system offers several visa subclasses, each with specific requirements and pathways to permanent residency.
Skilled Migration Visa Subclasses:
- Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189):
- A permanent visa that does not require sponsorship by a relative or state/territory government.
- Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190):
- A permanent visa requiring nomination by an Australian state or territory government.
- Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491):
- A five-year provisional visa requiring holders to live, work, and study in designated regional areas of Australia.
- Applicants must be nominated by a state or territory government or sponsored by an eligible Australian relative.
- Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 191):
- A permanent visa available to holders of the Subclass 491 visa.
- To qualify, applicants must have lived in a regional area for at least three years and have a taxable income at or above a specified threshold (currently AUD 53,900) for at least three years.
Recent Updates:
- Skills Assessment Submission: As of March 1, 2023, applicants invited to apply for a GSM visa can submit their skills assessments within 60 days of receiving the invitation.
- Migration Program Planning Levels for 2024–25: The Australian government has set the permanent Migration Program planning level at 185,000 places, with a 70:30 split between the Skill and Family streams. Notably, the Employer Sponsored visa category has increased to 44,000 places, and the State/Territory Nominated and Regional categories each have 33,000 places.
